Actual News on the Councelling Centre on SRHR and Family Planning Issues

Our activities were once again accompanied by three so-called ‘Big Walks’ – district-level information events – which were attended by over 4,300 participants, including young people, district officials, health workers, traditional leaders and influential community figures. This made them the largest events on the topic of SRHR in Karonga.

In addition, 26 healthcare workers received intensive training to further improve the provision of YFHS. This enabled more than 20 local leaders to be involved in our activities, thereby convincing them of the importance of SRHR initiatives for young people. These efforts contributed to a noticeable increase in positive support for our awareness-raising work, as trained health workers and local leaders actively promote YFHS and encourage community engagement in addressing SRHR issues.

With the opening of the POS Centre on 5 June 2025, a safe space is now available for the first time where young people can access youth-friendly health services and information on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in a confidential atmoshere.

Since then, the POS Centre has become a regular meeting point for young people in Karonga. By the end of 2025, the centre was already recording up to 120 visitors a day making use of the offered youth-friendly SRHR services. These include, in particular:

● Family planning services

● Testing for and treatment of sexually transmitted

   infections

● Psychosocial counselling

● Educational events

● Support for victims of gender-based violence

● Leisure activities for young people

Meanwhile, the energy-related expansion of the POS Centre has now been largely completed. In particular, the newly installed solar panel system enables the centre to operate continuously, meaning that all services can be provided regardless of the serious daily power restrictions, and that continuous cooling of sensitive medicines is guaranteed.

In order to continue supporting young people on their path to a self-determined future, we urgently need your help and donations.

Every donation helps !
